Campylobacter

According to the CDC, 47 percent of raw chicken breasts tested were contaminated with campylobacter germs. A single drop of infected chicken blood on a cutting board can contaminate any raw foods prepared on the board, such as salad.

Campylobacteriosis is an infectious intestinal disease—food poisoning—caused by bacteria of the genus Campylobacter. Common symptoms can include diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever within two to five days after exposure to the organism. The diarrhea might be bloody and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The illness usually lasts a week.
